Welcome to another segment of Tuesdays in Tshwane: notes from life in the suburbs of South Africa’s capital.
According to any local you ask, Spring has officially arrived in Pretoria, and with it, the flinging wide of windows and doors. Out with winter, in with spring, and in with…geckos!

I find blueberry containers are the best for a gecko catch-and-release. Clear on all sides, you can see the little guy and catch him without hurting him. I am careful to keep my movements slow, and I keep the container moving slowly as it approaches the wall. The more calmly I move, the less he seems to panic, and I rarely have a tail drop.
Of course, there’s no guarantee he doesn’t drop his tail to leave wriggling in your shower, but he’ll grow a new one, and you’ll manage the clean-up by taking heart that he is safely back in the bushes outside, protecting your house from creepy crawlies.
Happy Tuesday from Tshwane!
Love, MarLa
