Giving Up?

I’m not a member of any religious organization, but I like to torture myself from time to time.

No, I’m not talking about the Inquisition or anything fun like that.

It’s LENT! It’s a time to prove to myself that I’m not entirely a spoiled-rotten, first-world person, and can actually give up something I indulge in daily to understand the point of going without.

And of course, the catch is that even doing so proves exactly that I am a spoiled-rotten, first-world person.

Well, I’ll just have to live with that.

Giving up television and movies for Lent

How can I give up Downton Abbey midseason?

My friend Michelle mentioned on FB this morning that her young daughter suggested she give up reality TV for lent, and Michelle went on to say she may even give up all television. At first I thought “You’re crazy!” but then I thought, “What am I, scared to see just how addicted to television I am?” So, as of tomorrow, I’m giving up television and movies until March 30th.

I think I’m already in withdrawal. I can do without most of Primetime (although Big Bang Theory and Criminal Minds are going hurt), but how will I handle not having my Downton Abbey or my SyFy Channel?

Good thing I really love books, cards, jigsaw puzzles and board games!

Do you give up something this time of year? What?

Love, Marla

P.S. Sick today. Got hit with some kind of stomach bug quickly and fiercely last night and am staying home with it today.  (Ha, “fiercely.” Now imagining a stomach bug doing the RuPaul runway before sashaying away.) Hoping it passes quickly since I get on the plane tomorrow for the San Diego conference. No exercise for me today, which sucks because it’s weights day.

I would like to say I’ll try giving up TV too, but I already KNOW I would fail!! “A man’s got to know his limitations!” …see, even THAT is a Clint Eastwood quote! Too old, too many years in front of the “idiot box” I would never even try!! You go sister!
P.S. let me know when you want an update on some of your shows…I’ll be waiting in the corner with my little devil horns! ;)

You just listed the three shows I could never give up. Maybe when none of them are running and more I could try this.

It’s when I hear things like this I’m glad I only celebrate the chocolate-receiving end of Easter :)

Couldn’t give up Downton Abbey…it just started here again!

Well, that seals the deal for me. Just think what we will discover without TV! Go sista! I’m with ya!

Good luck with the TV thing! We skipped it last night in lieu of Mad Libs and I haven’t cried with such laughter in months. That’s not to say that we won’t be back to HGTV tonight ;)

I’m all in with giving up all TV for lent, toss the remote away ( or hide it somewhere convenient) and tune out. Just a thought … ;)

No, Marla. Just…no. *stomps feet* NO. I’ve already given up, like, a billion calories that used used to eat every day. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?? *FLAIL*

I’m glad you got the plumbing settled before the stomach bug hit!

You know I haven’t watched a single episode of Downtown Abbey, my friends talk about it but I haven’t found the chance to watch it.
I hope once I’m named Pope you join the lines of my reformed religion.
    xx
