Spotted this pair of African Fish Eagles along the Lower Sabie River, between the rest camps of Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge.
They are African Fish Eagles. Apparently there are only about 128 in the park, according to Robert’s birding guide, but they are relatively easy to find, since they live, feed and mate along the rivers.
Aren’t they beautiful? In love with these eagles? Just be glad you’re not a “lesser” bird, or its prey: “It is an aggressive hunter, known to seize a crocodile hatchling, rob a snake from a Bateleur’s talons and take out fish from a Pelican’s beak. It regularly harasses other waterbirds to disgorge their prey, which it then pirates. When it gets its food it either returns to the perch or settles on a sandbank to feed.”

Amazing how much they look like bald eagles. Are these two males, or do both gender of African Fish Eagles sport the white heads?
They have identical plumage. The female is larger and has more white on her breast (which I couldn’t see of course), so I would guess from these two that the female is the one on the left just based on size. Of course she’s sitting a little higher on the branch but I still think the one on the left looks slightly larger.
They are beautiful but they would eat me.
