This week’s challenge from WordPress is on the word “Foreign.” It would be easy to just put up any of thousands of location photos I’ve taken, because anything not familiar is foreign. But what the word made me think of first was about Việt Nam and how many times that little country was occupied by other countries, some with the intent to “save,” some with the intent to “conquer.” I kept thinking about it when I would cross the 400-year old Japanese Covered Bridge, also known as the Pagoda Bridge, or Cầu Chùa, in Hội An Ancient Town, so I wanted to share that photo with you.
Add my big foreign body into the mix and it felt both completely strange, and yet the just the next logical layering onto that small section of the world. How was it possible to feel both like an outsider and yet so completely like I could live and love there at a moment’s notice?
Have you ever felt dually foreign and familiar in a place or situation?
